The maiden voyage of The Escape Pod was a success, as well as an important learning experience. We spent two nights at the Sandy Pond Campground in Plymouth, MA over two steamy days in July. We wanted to stick fairly close to home in case anything went wrong or we were uncomfortable. Our tiny Scamp looked lost among the behemoth RVs that made up the section we were assigned to. Partly my fault, because I wanted a drive-through site, not a back-into site. We certainly got some bemused looks, but since we weren’t socializing, I didn’t care. As we were fiddling around with hooking up the electric connection, one friendly man (maskless, as was every person we saw other than employees), offered to help, but we politely said no and figured it out.

As longtime tent campers, having a fridge is amazing! Not to mention, a bed not on the ground. Such luxury! I’ve been following a Scamp Facebook group for tips and ideas, so I had stocked up on some things I thought would be useful. Definitely purchasing gel foam mattress toppers was a brilliant buy. We got these and cut them to fit over the Scamp cushions and they were great. For washing up, which we did at the camp’s outdoor facilities because we don’t have a gray water tank (yet), I stocked up on Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint soap, which is eco-friendly and safe for camping.

Last Christmas, friends gave me this vintage portable bar, so of course, that had to come along for the voyage. We stocked it with Wild Turkey and some favorite wine.

After months of staying home, it was kind of weird to be out and about with strangers again. We went swimming a couple of time in the pond, which was lovely, and it was fun to see kids splashing around just like everything was normal. I wasn’t thrilled about people wandering around the campground without masks on, but it was very easy to social distance and just move away from them. Sandy Pond Campground was very clean and well-kept up.

On our way home, we found an empty parking lot at a mall and practiced backing up for about an hour, to not a lot of success. Then we found this video on YouTube by the Long Long Honeymoon couple and it changed EVERYTHING! I feel like we need to send them a thank you card. We were able to back the Scamp into our uphill driveway in one try! If you think backing up a trailer is easy, just look around the Internet. It’s one of the biggest topics for RV-ers and garners endless discussions on the best way to do it. We now swear by The Scoop way of backing up.

I filled up a whole journal page with a list of stuff we need to bring next time and I’ll definitely be writing more about our adventures. Oh, and for those wondering about the bathroom situation, we got this portable toilet, which worked great! More on that later.
